Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.

On Thursday morning, the president and first lady of the United States visited Massachusetts as part of their usual Thanksgiving routine. They brought pumpkin pies to first responders on Nantucket and also spoke with members of the military over the phone. This tradition has been ongoing since 1975 for their family.

During a rainy day on Thursday, many people stayed indoors, but President Biden was seen visiting the Nantucket fire station, where he greeted and interacted with the officers on duty. He also took his grandson Beau along with him as they walked through the building, exchanging baseball caps with the firefighters.

The president thought deeply about the current political atmosphere in the United States, and encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic narratives, and be mindful of the news they consume.

Mr. Biden commented on recent surveys showing that many Americans are worried about the country’s direction. He suggested that this may be due to declining viewership of traditional news sources and overly negative news coverage on television.

He suggested that the reason for this might be due to the lack of positive news on television.

Despite encouraging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges in the future. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed mild disapproval of some of his successor’s recent ideas.
