Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare opportunity for them to meet in person. This meeting was part of Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.
According to three sources familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg initiated a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their strained relationship in the past ten years. Mr. Trump has criticized Meta for unfairly limiting him and other conservatives on their social media platforms, often attacking Mr. Zuckerberg online and in public speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. According to sources who wished to remain anonymous, the two men had a friendly conversation, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.
Following a meeting in the early afternoon, it was reported that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg arranged to have dinner at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening.
A representative from Meta expressed the significance of this moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg appreciated the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.
Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from potential backlash from the new administration. Meta has often been criticized by conservatives in Washington for what they perceive as censoring conservative opinions. Some members of Congress have even suggested regulating Meta.
