Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.
According to three sources familiar with the situation, the meeting was organized by Mr. Zuckerberg, who has had a difficult relationship with Mr. Trump for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unfairly restricted him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has criticized Mr. Zuckerberg publicly on social media and in his speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mark Zuckerberg traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. Sources who were not allowed to disclose information about the meeting mentioned that the conversation mainly consisted of friendly greetings, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg decided to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, as reported by sources.
A spokesperson for Meta expressed the significance of the current moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of being invited to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with members of his team.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from potential backlash from the new administration. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington, with some in Congress accusing the company of censoring conservative views. Former President Trump has even called for Mr. Zuckerberg to be arrested for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
