Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare opportunity for them to meet in person. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s ongoing efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.
Three individuals who are familiar with the situation have confirmed that a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. The meeting was arranged by Mr. Zuckerberg, who has had a difficult relationship with Mr. Trump for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unfairly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and at public events.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the meeting was mainly cordial, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, it was planned that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg would dine together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later in the evening.
A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of this moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is making efforts to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences that may arise from the new administration. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington for a while now, with some members of Congress wanting to limit what they perceive as censorship of conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has publicly demanded that Mr. Zuckerberg be imprisoned for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
