Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting on Wednesday with President-elect Donald J. Trump in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.
Three individuals who are knowledgeable about the situation have confirmed that a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. Mr. Zuckerberg initiated the meeting, despite having a strained relationship with Mr. Trump for the past ten years. Mr. Trump has continuously expressed his belief that Meta has unfairly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during his public speeches.
Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday night and met with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who requested anonymity, revealed that the meeting was mostly cordial, with Zuckerberg offering his congratulations to Trump on his presidential victory.
Following a meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg decided to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later in the evening, according to sources.
A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of this moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark was thankful for the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team.
Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing backlash from the new administration. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington, with some members of Congress wanting to limit what they perceive as censorship of conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has publicly suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for allegedly working against him in the 2020 election.
