Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a positive relationship with Mr. Trump.

According to three sources familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg arranged a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their strained relationship in recent years. Mr. Trump has criticized Meta, claiming that the company has unfairly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms. He has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during public speeches.

On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the next day. Sources who wished to remain anonymous revealed that the two men had a friendly conversation, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.

Following a meeting in the early afternoon, it was discussed that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg would meet for dinner at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that evening.

A spokesperson for Meta expressed the significance of the current moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.

However, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences from the new administration. Meta has faced criticism from conservatives in Washington, with some in Congress accusing them of censoring conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has even suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
