Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, in a rare in-person meeting. This was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a positive relationship with Trump.

Three individuals familiar with the situation confirmed that the meeting was arranged by Mr. Zuckerberg, who has had a tense relationship with Mr. Trump for the past ten years. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unfairly restricted him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during public speeches.

On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. Sources, speaking anonymously, shared that the two men had a cordial conversation, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.

Following a meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg arranged to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that evening, according to sources.

A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of the current moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was thankful for being invited to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team.

However, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences that may come from the new government. Meta has faced criticism from conservatives in Washington who believe they are censoring conservative opinions. Former President Trump even suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be arrested for allegedly working against him during the 2020 election.
