Despite facing backlash and criticism, President-elect Donald J. Trump is unapologetic in his choice to appoint Kash Patel as F.B.I. director. This decision shows that Trump is not backing down from his agenda of appointing individuals who align with his beliefs, even if they are controversial or closely related to him.

Despite facing criticism for his current appointees, President Trump remains steadfast in his approach to building his new administration. Instead of opting for candidates with stronger qualifications and reputations that would have an easier time getting confirmed by the Senate, Trump continues to select individuals with strong ideological beliefs, conspiracy theories, and even relatives for key government roles quickly and consistently.

One notable move was when he decided to remove the F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, who he had chosen for the role in his first term, and instead put Kash Patel in charge. Patel, known for his anti-"deep state" beliefs, was seen as a troublemaker and a potential threat by many Trump advisors who worked to prevent him from gaining significant influence during the previous administration.

While Mr. Patel received a lot of attention, Mr. Trump also appointed the fathers of two of his children’s spouses to significant positions over the weekend. He revealed his intention to nominate Charles Kushner, the father of Jared Kushner who is married to Ivanka Trump and was previously pardoned by Trump, as the ambassador to France. Additionally, he selected Massad Boulos, the father of Michael Boulos who is married to Tiffany Trump, to serve as his White House senior adviser focusing on Arab and Middle Eastern matters.

Mr. Trump’s strong commitment to appointing unconventional individuals shows how dedicated he is to selecting loyal supporters who will help him achieve his goals, such as seeking revenge against those he sees as his adversaries. Despite Mr. Trump’s claims that President Biden is using government agencies to target him, there is no proof that Mr. Biden has been involved in any recent legal actions against Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump’s controversial choices are also a challenge to Senate Republicans to test their willingness to oppose nominees they believe are unfit for the position, especially after they successfully blocked former Representative Matt Gaetz’s nomination as attorney general.

Gregg Nunziata, who previously served as the chief nominations counsel for Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans, suggested that by nominating individuals who may lack traditional qualifications but show strong personal loyalty and a willingness to confront, the president appears to be challenging the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty of serving as a check on the president’s power.
