Donald J. Trump, who has been elected as the President, will visit France this Saturday to attend the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This will be his first trip abroad since the recent election, and it signifies how world leaders are moving forward from the Biden administration.
Donald Trump revealed on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he would be visiting the iconic Notre Dame building. He expressed his gratitude towards French President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of Notre Dame to its former glory and beyond. Trump described the building as "Magnificent and Historic" and stated that he was honored to share his visit plans with the public.
"It will be a day to remember for everyone!" he expressed.
The journey has been planned for a few days, as per individuals who were informed about the arrangements. It was reported that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron have had a phone call at least once, as mentioned by one of the sources.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, will be in attendance as per information provided by one of the individuals briefed on the matter.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has been staying at his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago, without venturing out often.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump has a fondness for elaborate ceremonies and grand construction sites, particularly historic ones. This trip also signifies his reemergence on the global platform.
However, this is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European partners, especially with President Macron.
The French president, dealing with unrest within his own country due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left, praised President Trump at the beginning of Trump’s presidency. Macron extended an invitation for Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, which Trump accepted enthusiastically.
However, the relationship between Mr. Macron and Mr. Trump began to deteriorate in 2018 when Mr. Macron expressed support for the concept of a European military defense that could act as a counterbalance to Russia, China, and even the United States. This stance clashed with Mr. Trump’s nationalist views, especially as right-wing populist movements, which often supported Trump, were gaining momentum in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the F.B.I. conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago for confidential documents, with some of the seized information being connected to Mr. Macron.
