Donald J. Trump, the incoming President, will be visiting France this Saturday to attend the reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was severely damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip will be his first international visit since winning the election last month and reflects the swift transition away from the Biden administration by global leaders.
President Trump revealed his upcoming visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral through his social media platform, Truth Social. He expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to see the "Magnificent and Historic" building. He also praised French President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of Notre Dame to its former glory.
"It will be a day that holds significant importance for everyone!" he expressed in written form.
The journey has been planned for a few days, as reported by individuals who were given information about the planning process. There has been at least one phone call between Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron, as confirmed by one of the sources.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but it is said that Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, will be in attendance, as informed by one of the individuals briefed on the matter.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over President Biden’s spot on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has mostly stayed at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump enjoys formal events and impressive construction sites, especially those with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reemergence onto the international stage.
However, this event is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European partners, especially with Mr. Macron.
The President of France, who is dealing with unrest within his own country due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left, praised President Trump at the beginning of Trump’s presidency. Macron invited Trump to the Bastille Day celebration in Paris in 2017, and Trump enthusiastically accepted the invitation.
The relationship between Mr. Macron and Mr. Trump turned bad in 2018 when Mr. Macron supported the concept of a European military defense that could defend against Russia, China, and even the United States. This clashed with Mr. Trump’s nationalist views, especially as far-right populists who supported Trump were gaining power in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago looking for confidential documents. Some of the information seized by federal agents during the search pertained to Mr. Macron.
