Donald J. Trump, who will soon become the President, is heading to France on Saturday to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip will be his first international visit since winning the election last month, and it showcases the shift in global leadership away from the Biden administration.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Mr. Trump shared his upcoming trip to the Notre Dame Cathedral, expressing his excitement and gratitude. He praised President Macron for overseeing the restoration of the historic building and bringing it back to its former grandeur.
He expressed that it would be a memorable day for everyone involved.
The travel plans have been in progress for a few days, as per individuals who were informed about the process. It was reported that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron had a phone call at least once before the trip.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, will be in attendance as informed by a source.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over President Biden’s spot on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has hardly ventured outside of Mar-a-Lago, his personal club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump has a fondness for elaborate events and construction projects, especially those with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reentry onto the global platform.
However, this incident is just the most recent development in a complicated relationship with European partners, especially with French President Macron.
The President of France, experiencing unrest within his own country due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left groups, praised President Trump during the beginning of his time in office. Macron extended an invitation to Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, and Trump accepted the invitation enthusiastically.
The relationship between Macron and Trump deteriorated in 2018 when Macron expressed support for a European military defense that could rival Russia, China, and the United States. Macron’s stance clashed with Trump’s nationalist views, especially as far-right populist movements aligned with Trump were gaining traction in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago looking for confidential documents. Some of the information seized by federal agents during the search was connected to Mr. Macron.
