Donald J. Trump, who won the presidential election, will visit France on Saturday to attend the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip will be his first overseas visit since the election and represents a shift away from the Biden presidency for global leaders.
President Trump shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he was excited to announce his upcoming visit to the iconic Notre Dame cathedral in France. He praised President Macron for overseeing the restoration of the historic building to its former glory.
"It will be a day that holds significance for everyone," he penned.
The upcoming trip has been planned for several days, as reported by individuals with knowledge of the arrangements. There has been at least one phone call between President Trump and President Macron, as stated by one of the sources.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, however, Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, is expected to attend, as informed by one of the individuals briefed on the matter.
Since winning a second term by beating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has spent most of his time at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip was not unexpected. Mr. Trump is known for his appreciation of elaborate ceremonies and impressive construction projects, particularly those with historical significance. This trip signifies his reemergence onto the global stage.
However, it is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European partners, especially with Mr. Macron.
The President of France, who is dealing with unrest within his own country due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left, praised President Trump at the beginning of his presidency. Macron invited Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, to which Trump enthusiastically accepted.
However, the relationship between Macron and Trump deteriorated in 2018, when Macron supported the concept of a European military defense that could rival Russia, China, and the United States. Macron’s stance clashed with Trump’s nationalist views, especially as far-right populists, who typically supported Trump, were gaining power in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago to look for confidential documents. Among the items seized by federal agents during the search were documents related to Mr. Macron.
