President-elect Donald J. Trump will be visiting France this Saturday to attend the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip marks his first international visit since winning the election last month and signifies the transition away from the Biden administration for world leaders.

Donald Trump revealed his upcoming visit to Notre Dame on his social media app, Truth Social, expressing his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. He praised French President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of the cathedral to its former beauty and beyond.

He expressed that it would be a day that is significant and memorable for everyone.

The preparations for the trip have been ongoing for a few days, as reported by individuals who were informed about the planning process. It was also mentioned by one source that there has been at least one phone call between Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron.

It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, is expected to attend, as per information given to one source.

Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has mostly stayed at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump enjoys elaborate events and impressive construction sites, particularly those with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reentry onto the global platform.

However, it is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European partners, especially with Mr. Macron.

The French president, who is dealing with internal unrest due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left factions, praised President Trump at the beginning of his presidency. Macron extended an invitation to Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, and Trump accepted the offer enthusiastically.

The relationship between Macron and Trump turned bad in 2018 when Macron supported the concept of a European military defense that could defend against Russia, China, and the United States. Macron’s stance clashed with Trump’s nationalism, especially as far-right populists aligned with Trump were gaining power in France and other parts of Europe.

In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago to look for secret documents. Some of the information seized during the search was connected to Mr. Macron.
