President-elect Donald J. Trump is scheduled to visit France this Saturday to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip marks his first visit abroad since winning the election last month and signifies the swift transition away from the Biden administration for global leaders.
Announcing his upcoming trip on his social media platform, Truth Social, Mr. Trump expressed his excitement at the opportunity to visit the impressive and historic Notre Dame building. He praised President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of Notre Dame to its former glory and beyond.
He penned that it would be a day that was significant for everyone involved.
The journey has been planned for a few days, as per individuals who were informed about the preparations. One of the sources mentioned that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron have had at least one phone call.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, is expected to attend, as per information provided by one of the individuals briefed on the matter.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took President Biden’s place on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has spent most of his time at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip wasn’t unexpected. Mr. Trump enjoys elaborate events and impressive construction sites, particularly those with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reappearance on the international platform.
However, it is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European allies, especially with Mr. Macron.
The President of France, dealing with unrest within his own country due to criticism from both the far-right and far-left, praised President Trump at the beginning of Trump’s presidency. Macron extended an invitation for Trump to attend France’s Bastille Day celebration in 2017, and Trump accepted enthusiastically.
The relationship between Macron and Trump turned bad in 2018 when Macron supported the idea of a European military defense that could stand up to Russia, China, and the United States. Macron’s stance clashed with Trump’s nationalism, especially as far-right populists who supported Trump were gaining popularity in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago looking for classified documents. During the search, federal agents seized some information related to Mr. Macron.
