Donald J. Trump, who is set to become the President, will be visiting France on Saturday to attend the reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was severely damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip marks his first visit overseas since the recent election and reflects the rapid transition away from the Biden administration by global leaders.
Donald Trump revealed on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he will be visiting the iconic Notre Dame cathedral. He praised President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of the cathedral to its former glory.
"It’s going to be a day that holds significance for everyone!" he penned.
The travel plans have been in progress for a few days, as shared by individuals familiar with the planning. It was reported that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron have communicated over the phone at least once.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, will be in attendance, as reported by one of the individuals who received information about the event.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has hardly been seen outside of Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump has a fondness for lavish events and impressive construction projects, particularly those with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reemergence onto the global platform.
However, it is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European partners, especially with Mr. Macron.
The French president, experiencing unrest within his own country due to opposition from extreme political groups, praised President Trump at the beginning of his presidency. Macron extended an invitation for Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, which Trump accepted with enthusiasm.
The relationship between Macron and Trump turned negative in 2018 when Macron supported the idea of a European military defense that could stand up to Russia, China, and the United States. Macron’s stance went against Trump’s nationalist views, especially as far-right populists, who supported Trump, were gaining power in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago for undisclosed classified documents, during which they seized information related to Mr. Macron.
