President-elect Donald J. Trump will visit France on Saturday to attend the reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was severely damaged by a fire five years ago. This will be his first trip abroad since winning the election last month, highlighting the swift transition from the Biden administration to his presidency as global leaders move forward.
Donald Trump shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he will be visiting the famous Notre Dame Cathedral, calling it a privilege. He praised French President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of Notre Dame to its former glory and beyond.
He expressed that it would be a memorable day for everyone.
According to sources familiar with the situation, the trip has been planned for a few days. It was mentioned that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron have spoken on the phone at least once.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, however, Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, is expected to attend, as informed by a source.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has been spending most of his time at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump has a strong affinity for elaborate ceremonies and impressive construction sites, particularly those with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reemergence onto the global platform.
However, this incident is just the most recent development in a difficult relationship with European allies overall, and specifically with Mr. Macron.
The President of France, who is dealing with internal unrest due to backlash from extreme political groups, praised President Trump at the start of his presidency. Macron extended an invitation to Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, and Trump accepted enthusiastically.
The relationship between Macron and Trump became strained in 2018 when Macron expressed support for a unified European military defense to protect against threats from Russia, China, and the United States. This clashed with Trump’s nationalist views, especially as far-right populists in France and other European countries were gaining power and aligning with Trump.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago in search of classified documents. During the search, federal agents seized information related to Mr. Macron from the property.
