President-elect Donald J. Trump is scheduled to visit France on Saturday for the reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip will be his first international visit since winning the election last month and serves as a sign of the swift transition away from the Biden administration for global leaders.
Donald Trump revealed his upcoming visit to Notre Dame Cathedral on his social media app, Truth Social, expressing his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. He praised French President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the successful restoration of the iconic landmark.
He mentioned that it would be a day that is important to everyone.
The journey has been planned for a few days, as shared by sources familiar with the planning. It was mentioned by one source that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron have spoken on the phone at least once.
It is anticipated that President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, will attend as per information from one of the sources who was briefed.
Since winning a second term by beating Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, Mr. Trump has hardly left Mar-a-Lago, his private residence and club in Palm Beach, Florida.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump enjoys elaborate events and impressive construction sites, particularly ones with historical significance. This trip also signifies his re-emergence onto the global platform.
However, this incident is also the most recent development in a tense relationship with European allies, especially with Mr. Macron.
The President of France, dealing with unrest within his own country due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left, praised President Trump at the beginning of his presidency. Macron extended an invitation for Trump to join the Bastille Day festivities in Paris in 2017, and Trump accepted enthusiastically.
In 2018, the relationship between Mr. Macron and Mr. Trump became strained when Mr. Macron expressed support for a European military defense that could defend against Russia, China, and the United States. This clashed with Mr. Trump’s nationalist views, especially as right-wing populist movements were gaining traction in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago looking for classified documents. Some of the information seized by federal agents during the search was related to Mr. Macron.
