President-elect Donald J. Trump is planning to visit France this Saturday to attend the reopening of the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by a fire five years ago. This trip will be his first international one since winning the election last month, signaling a shift in focus from the Biden administration among global leaders.
Donald Trump shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he will be visiting the famous Notre Dame cathedral in France. He expressed gratitude towards President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration of the iconic landmark to its former glory.
He wrote that it would be a unique and memorable day for everyone involved.
The journey has been planned for a few days, as per individuals who were informed about the arrangement. One of the sources mentioned that Mr. Trump and Mr. Macron have spoken over the phone at least once.
President Biden will not be present at the reopening event, but Dr. Jill Biden, the first lady, is scheduled to attend based on information from a source familiar with the situation.
Since winning a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, President Trump has mostly stayed at his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida, known as Mar-a-Lago.
The announcement of the trip was somewhat expected. Mr. Trump enjoys formalities and magnificence, particularly when it comes to construction sites with historical significance. This trip also signifies his reemergence on the global platform.
However, this incident is also the most recent development in a complicated relationship with European allies, especially with Mr. Macron.
The President of France is currently dealing with unrest within his own country due to opposition from both the far-right and far-left. Despite this, he showed admiration towards President Trump at the beginning of Trump’s presidency. Macron extended an invitation to Trump to join in France’s Bastille Day festivities in 2017, which Trump accepted enthusiastically.
The relationship between Macron and Trump became strained in 2018 when Macron expressed support for a European military defense that could stand up to Russia, China, and the United States. Macron’s stance clashed with Trump’s nationalist views, especially as far-right populists aligned with Trump were gaining popularity in France and other parts of Europe.
In August 2022, the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago for undisclosed classified documents. During the search, federal agents seized information from the property that was connected to Mr. Macron.
