On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter targeted two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities suspect that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose the school as his target due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist church. Both of the victims, who are male students, are in a very critical state and are currently receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Sheriff Kory L. Honea of Butte County provided this information during a press briefing held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, due to reports of an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed that 911 calls were made regarding the incident.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter entered the campus with the intention of meeting with the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The sheriff mentioned that the meeting was scheduled beforehand and appeared to be friendly. However, investigators are still looking into whether the meeting was a trick by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

Soon after the meeting concluded, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It was believed that the students were not inside the classroom at the time of the shooting.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the shooter, a man who was of adult age, was incapacitated due to a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted. A handgun was located close to the shooter’s body. Authorities are currently investigating how the shooter acquired the weapon.
