A man who was caught on camera jumping over a judge’s bench and attacking her in a Las Vegas courtroom has been given a lengthy prison sentence.
Deobra Redden, a 31-year-old man, received a prison sentence in Nevada for attacking Judge Mary Kay Holthus of Clark County District Court on January 3rd. Court records show that he was sentenced to serve between 26 and 65 years. In September, he admitted to attempted murder and other charges, such as battery by a prisoner, citing mental illness as a factor.
The incident gained widespread recognition as it was captured on video in the courtroom showing Mr. Redden charging towards the judge and leaping over the bench, causing the flags to topple behind them.
Officials reported that an attack caused injuries to Judge Holthus, a court marshal, and the judge’s law clerk. Despite being 62 years old at the time, the judge received treatment for the injuries and was able to resume work.
During the sentencing of Mr. Redden for a battery charge in April 2023, an incident occurred involving Judge Holthus. After the incident, Judge Holthus proceeded to sentence Mr. Redden to 19 to 48 months in prison for the charge he had admitted guilt to.
During the court hearing on Tuesday, Mr. Redden requested for mercy and explained that he did not have any intention to harm Judge Holthus, as reported by KLAS-TV.
During the hearing, he stated that he wasn’t trying to justify his actions, but he wanted to clarify that he doesn’t believe he is a bad person and did not have any intention of causing harm to Mary Kay Holthus. He emphasized that he genuinely cared about her well-being.
Judge Susan Johnson from the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County stated that the incident was not only meant as retaliation against Judge Holthus, but also as an attack on the entire judiciary system.
During the hearing, Judge Holthus remained silent, so John Giordani, who is the chief deputy district lawyer, read a statement on her behalf.
The statement mentioned that the person made a deliberate choice to try and kill me, putting in all their effort to make it happen. The person expressed a desire for the perpetrator to receive a life sentence without the chance of parole for the crime of murder.
On Wednesday, there were unanswered inquiries directed at Mr. Redden’s lawyer, Carl Arnold.
According to The Associated Press, Mr. Arnold stated that Mr. Redden was not taking his prescribed medication for schizophrenia at the time of the attack.
Research was conducted by Susan C. Beachy.
