On Sunday, President-elect Donald J. Trump revealed his selection of Christopher Landau, a lawyer who previously served as an ambassador to Mexico, to serve as the deputy secretary of state.
If approved by the Senate, Mr. Landau would collaborate with the secretary of state to implement Mr. Trump’s foreign policy objectives. These objectives include addressing illegal immigration, implementing tariffs to support American manufacturing, prioritizing peace over involvement in wars, and encouraging allies to contribute more to military defense costs.
Donald Trump has stated that he is willing to engage in discussions with authoritarian leaders in order to negotiate agreements. This includes leaders such as Vladimir Putin of Russia, Xi Jinping of China, and Kim Jong-un of North Korea.
President Trump has chosen Senator Marco Rubio from Florida to serve as the secretary of state. Senator Rubio is currently in the process of being confirmed by the Senate, along with Mr. Landau.
On Sunday night, Mr. Trump announced on social media that Mr. Landau would be collaborating with Mr. Rubio to advance the country’s security and economic well-being through a foreign policy that puts America first.
Due to his experience working on issues related to Mexico, Mr. Landau may be responsible for managing migration and tariffs, which would require working closely with other U.S. government agencies. President Trump has vowed to remove a significant number of undocumented immigrants from the country. In the statement, President Trump mentioned that Mr. Landau had played a role in decreasing illegal immigration during his time as ambassador.
