According to federal filings released on Thursday, Elon Musk, who is currently the wealthiest person in the world, donated more than $250 million in the last few months of the recent election to support Donald J. Trump’s campaign for the presidency.

The total amount donated by Mr. Musk is only a portion of his overall wealth. However, it is still a significant sum given by one individual, who has contributed to various affiliated organizations and is now influencing the direction of the upcoming administration.

Elon Musk made a bold decision to contribute $20 million to support a super PAC named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the late Supreme Court justice known for her liberal views. However, the super PAC’s goal was to help soften Donald Trump’s stance on abortion, despite appearing to honor a liberal figure.

Most of the money donated by Mr. Musk went to his primary super PAC, America PAC, with three donations of $25 million each in the last weeks of the election, as reported in new documents filed with the Federal Election Commission. Additionally, Mr. Musk allocated $40.5 million towards controversial payments to voters in swing states who endorsed the Constitution by signing a petition.

Throughout the race, he generously donated a total of $239 million in cash and in-kind contributions to America PAC. In this election cycle, Mr. Musk and his affiliated entities reported a total of $277 million in contributions to federal groups.

America PAC put a lot of effort into supporting Mr. Trump through grassroots organizing. Mr. Musk believed it was crucial to defeat President Biden and became a strong supporter of Mr. Trump after an assassination attempt in July. He was so committed to the campaign that he made frequent appearances in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state, to rally support for the Republican nominee.
