On Sunday, President-elect Donald J. Trump revealed his selection of Christopher Landau, a lawyer and former ambassador to Mexico, as his choice for deputy secretary of state.
If the Senate approves his appointment, Mr. Landau will collaborate with the secretary of state to implement President Trump’s foreign policy agenda. This agenda includes reducing illegal immigration, implementing tariffs to boost American manufacturing, avoiding military conflicts, and encouraging allies to contribute more to defense costs.
Donald Trump has stated that he is willing to engage in discussions with authoritarian leaders in order to negotiate agreements, such as Vladimir Putin of Russia, Xi Jinping of China, and Kim Jong-un of North Korea.
President Trump has chosen Senator Marco Rubio from Florida to serve as the secretary of state. Senator Rubio is currently waiting for approval from the Senate, along with Mr. Landau.
On Sunday night, President Trump shared on social media that Mr. Landau will be collaborating with Mr. Rubio to advance the country’s security and economic interests with a focus on prioritizing America’s foreign policy.
Due to his experience with Mexico, Mr. Landau may be assigned to manage migration and tariffs, requiring collaboration with other U.S. government departments. President Trump has pledged to remove many undocumented immigrants. During the announcement, President Trump mentioned that Mr. Landau had assisted in decreasing illegal immigration while serving as ambassador.
