On Wednesday morning, Penelope Hegseth, the mother of Pete Hegseth, expressed that her son has changed since 2018. She had previously sent an email alleging that he mistreated women and lacked integrity and character.
Mrs. Hegseth stated on "Fox & Friends" that Pete has transformed into a new individual, having been forgiven and changed for the better.
"I hope that people, especially our female senators, take the time to truly understand who Pete is today. I urge you to listen to him with an open heart and recognize the truth of his character," she stated. She also emphasized that Pete does not mistreat women.
She showed up after The New York Times released an email she had written while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce from his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she admitted that she did not mean what she said in that email and that she had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following reports of alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofit organizations in an article by The New Yorker, additional allegations have surfaced against Mr. Hegseth. One of these claims involves a woman who accused him of rape at a political conference in 2017, although no charges were filed after an investigation. Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, maintains that the encounter was consensual.
The negative consequences of the situation have put Mr. Hegseth’s potential appointment as head of the Defense Department in the upcoming Trump administration at risk. It is reported that President-elect Donald J. Trump is considering alternative candidates for the position.
