On Wednesday morning, Penelope Hegseth, who is the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated that her son had changed since 2018. Back then, she had sent an email in which she accused him of mistreating women regularly and of not having good morals and character.
During an appearance on "Fox & Friends," Mrs. Hegseth mentioned that Pete has undergone a significant transformation and is now a different person, having been redeemed, forgiven, and changed.
"I hope that people, especially our female senators, will take the time to get to know Pete today and listen to him with an open heart. It is important to hear the truth about Pete and understand that he does not mistreat women."
She made an appearance after The New York Times published an email she wrote while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce from his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she admitted that she did not stand by what she said in the email and had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following allegations of alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofit organizations reported in an article in The New Yorker, there were further claims that Mr. Hegseth had raped a woman at a political conference in 2017. Despite no charges being filed after an investigation, Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, maintains that the encounter was consensual.
The negative consequences of the situation have put Mr. Hegseth’s potential to lead the Defense Department in the upcoming Trump administration at risk. It is rumored that President-elect Donald J. Trump is considering different candidates for the position instead.
