On Wednesday morning, Penelope Hegseth, the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated that her son had changed since 2018, when she sent an email accusing him of mistreating women and having a lack of decency and character.

During an appearance on "Fox & Friends," Mrs. Hegseth described Pete as a transformed individual who has been forgiven and redeemed.

"I wish for everyone, especially our female senators, to take the time to get to know Pete today. I hope you will listen to him with an open heart and recognize the truth about him. It is important to note that he respects women and does not mistreat them."

She made an appearance following the publication of an email she wrote while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce with his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she stated that she did not stand by what she said in the email and had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.

Following reports of alcohol abuse and mismanagement at nonprofit organizations, The New Yorker published an article this week that raised concerns. Additionally, Mr. Hegseth faced accusations of rape at a political conference in 2017, although no charges were filed as the encounter was reportedly consensual according to his lawyer, Timothy Parlatore.

The negative consequences of recent events have put Mr. Hegseth’s potential appointment as head of the Defense Department in the upcoming Trump administration at risk. President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly considering alternative candidates for the position.
