Penelope Hegseth stated on Wednesday that her son, Pete Hegseth, has undergone a significant change since 2018. She mentioned that he is no longer the same person she criticized in an email for allegedly mistreating women and lacking moral character.
During an appearance on "Fox & Friends," Mrs. Hegseth stated that Pete is a transformed individual who has been forgiven and redeemed.
"I hope that people, particularly our female senators, take the time to get to know Pete today and listen to him with an open heart. I want you to see the truth about Pete and understand that he does not mistreat women."
She made an appearance after The New York Times released an email she wrote while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce with his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she mentioned that she didn’t mean what she said in that email and had already apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following recent accusations of alcohol abuse and mismanagement at nonprofit organizations, an article was published in The New Yorker this week. Additionally, Mr. Hegseth has been accused of rape by a woman at a political conference in 2017, although no charges were filed after an investigation. Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, claims that the encounter was consensual.
The negative consequences of recent events have put Mr. Hegseth’s potential leadership of the Defense Department in the upcoming Trump administration at risk. President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly considering alternative candidates for the position.
