Penelope Hegseth, who is the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated on Wednesday morning that her son has changed since 2018. She previously sent an email alleging that he mistreated women regularly and lacked integrity and moral character.
During an appearance on "Fox & Friends," Mrs. Hegseth stated that Pete has undergone a transformation and is now a different person who has been forgiven and changed for the better.
"I hope that everyone, especially female senators, takes the time to truly understand who Pete is today. Listen to him with an open heart and hear the truth about him. It’s important to remember that he treats women respectfully and does not mistreat them."
She made an appearance following the release of an email she sent while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce with his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she mentioned that she did not stand by the content of the email and had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following reports of alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofit organizations in an article in The New Yorker, Mr. Hegseth faced further scrutiny. Allegations of rape at a political conference in 2017 were made by a woman, but no charges were filed after an investigation. Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer stated that the encounter was consensual.
The negative impact of recent events has put Mr. Hegseth’s potential leadership role in the Defense Department under President-elect Donald J. Trump at risk. It is rumored that Trump is considering alternative candidates for the position.
