Pete Hegseth’s mother appeared on a Fox show to vouch for her son’s character, stating that he has undergone significant personal growth. She discussed her son, who is President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick for defense secretary, on the same network where he is employed.

On Wednesday morning, Penelope Hegseth, the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated that her son has changed since 2018. She sent an email back then accusing him of mistreating women regularly and lacking integrity and moral values.

Mrs. Hegseth stated on "Fox & Friends" that Pete has transformed into a new individual, being redeemed, forgiven, and changed.

"I hope that today people will have the chance to learn about Pete, especially our female senators, and that you will listen to him with an open heart and hear the truth about him," she stated. She also mentioned that Pete does not mistreat women.

She made an appearance following the publication of an email she wrote while Mr. Hegseth was going through a tough divorce from his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she stated that she didn’t stand by what was said in that email and had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.

Following reports of alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofit organizations in an article by The New Yorker, Mr. Hegseth has been under scrutiny. Additionally, a woman made a police complaint accusing him of raping her at a political conference in 2017, but no charges were filed after an investigation. Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer stated that the encounter was consensual.

The negative consequences of the situation have put Mr. Hegseth’s potential role as leader of the Defense Department in the upcoming Trump administration at risk. President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly considering alternative candidates for the position.
