On Wednesday morning, Penelope Hegseth, the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated that her son has changed since 2018 when she sent an email accusing him of mistreating women and lacking moral integrity.
Mrs. Hegseth stated on "Fox & Friends" that Pete is a transformed individual who has been forgiven and redeemed.
"I really hope that people, especially female senators, take the time to learn about Pete today. I hope you listen to him with an open heart and understand the truth about him," she expressed. She emphasized that Pete does not mistreat women.
She made an appearance following The New York Times releasing an email she had written while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce from his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she stated that she did not stand by what she had said in the email and had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following accusations of alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofit organizations, a recent article in The New Yorker brought attention to Mr. Hegseth. Additionally, a woman filed a police complaint alleging that he raped her at a political conference in 2017. Despite an investigation that led to no charges, Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer maintains that the encounter was consensual.
The negative consequences from both incidents have put Mr. Hegseth’s potential position as the leader of the Defense Department under threat in the upcoming Trump administration, as President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly considering different candidates for the role.
