Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, Republicans will still hold a slight majority in the House when the next Congress begins. The Republican party will have 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a representative for the campaign.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray announced his win before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.
In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results indicate that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political agendas and is committed to transparency and responsibility.
Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a narrow margin in the same district.
