In California’s Central Valley, a Democratic candidate who previously served in the state legislature won against the Republican incumbent in the last House race of 2024 to be decided. This information was reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives with 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215 seats when the next Congress meets.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for his campaign.

Before California counties were obligated to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days earlier.

In a statement released on X, Mr. Gray expressed his belief that the final results show the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political partisanship, emphasizing the importance of independence and accountability.

Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that overturned the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won with one of the smallest margins in any House race.
