On Tuesday, a Democratic candidate who previously served in the state legislature won against the Republican currently in office in California’s Central Valley. This election result marked the final House race of 2024 to be officially announced, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. Republicans will hold 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat shortly before The Associated Press made their announcement, according to Duane Dichiara, a representative for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the needs of the people in the Valley over political partisanship.
Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that overturned the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin in comparison to other House races.
