In California’s Central Valley, a Democratic candidate who previously served in the state legislature won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday. This victory resulted in flipping the seat in the 2024 House race, making it the final race to be called by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the recent election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress begins. The Republicans will hold 220 seats while the Democrats will have 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. declared the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days in advance.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics and is accountable and independent.
Mr. Gray, who used to be part of the California State Assembly, had a surprising win in the 13th Congressional District, flipping the outcome from the 2022 election. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won in that district with one of the smallest margins in any House race.
