On Tuesday, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley, marking the last House race of 2024 to be determined, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics and is both independent and accountable.
Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very slim margin, making it one of the closest House races.
