Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republican party will still have a slight majority in the House after the next Congress is seated. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Before The A.P. declared the winner, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes, accepted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political party affiliations. The final results of the election support this need for independent and responsible leadership.
Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years prior, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in any House race.
