In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state lawmaker won the election on Tuesday, defeating the Republican incumbent. This victory flipped a seat in the House of Representatives for the 2024 election, which was the final race to be officially called, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray was able to defeat U.S. Representative John Duarte in the recent election, the Republican party will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before the Associated Press officially declared the results, Mr. Duarte accepted defeat in a closely contested election where he was behind by 187 votes out of over 210,000 ballots cast. This information was confirmed by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Before the deadline for California counties to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory two days earlier on Tuesday.

Mr. Gray expressed in a statement on X that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations.

Mr. Gray, a former California State Assembly member, won the 13th Congressional District election in a turnaround from the 2022 results. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a very narrow margin in what was one of the closest House races.
