In the most recent House race, a former state lawmaker from the Democratic party won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley. This victory marked the final House race of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Although challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republican party will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Mr. Gray had announced his win on Tuesday, two days before California counties were supposed to officially confirm their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and values accountability and independence.
Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, which was a change from the results in 2022 when Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in any House race.
