In the recent election, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative to change the political party holding a seat in California’s Central Valley. This race was the final House race of the 2024 election to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.
Before The Associated Press declared the results, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 votes, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a representative for the campaign.
Before counties in California were required to certify their results, Mr. Gray declared victory on Tuesday, two days earlier.
Mr. Gray stated that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over political parties.
Mr. Gray, a former California State Assembly member, won in the 13th Congressional District in a turnaround from the 2022 election results. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin in comparison to other House races.
