A former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican officeholder in California’s Central Valley on Tuesday, resulting in a shift in the House seat. This race was the final one in the 2024 elections to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the recent election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives when the new Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.
According to Duane Dichiara, a campaign spokesperson, Mr. Duarte accepted defeat before The A.P. announced the results, after falling behind by 187 votes in a competition with over 210,000 votes cast.
Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday, preceding the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results by two days.
In a statement released on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political partisanship and is accountable for their actions.
Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, won the 13th Congressional District election in a turnaround from the 2022 results. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in any House race.
