In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, flipping a seat that was the final House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republican Party will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray claimed victory two days before California counties had to officially confirm their results.
In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed his belief that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations. He emphasized the importance of independence and accountability in serving the community.
Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, won in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won with one of the smallest margins in any House race.
