On Tuesday, a Democratic candidate who previously served in the state legislature won against the current Republican officeholder in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in a change of party for the seat and was the final House race of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press

Even though Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have slight control over the House in the upcoming Congress. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before the Associated Press made the official call, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots cast, conceded according to a spokesperson for his campaign named Duane Dichiara.

Before California counties were required to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days in advance.

In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and is willing to be held accountable.

Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, achieved victory in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from the 2022 election. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin, making it one of the closest House races.
