On Tuesday, a Democrat who previously served as a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in the flipping of a seat in the House of Representatives, making it the final race of the 2024 election to be decided. This information was reported
Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215.
Before the Associated Press announced the official result, Mr. Duarte’s campaign spokesperson, Duane Dichiara, stated that Mr. Duarte had accepted defeat in the election where he was behind by 187 votes out of over 210,000 ballots cast.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political partisanship, emphasizing the importance of independence and accountability.
Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, had a surprising win in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years prior, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in that House race.
