On Tuesday, a Democratic former state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent in California’s Central Valley, flipping a seat in the last House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, the Republican party will still have a slight majority in the House when the new Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes, accepted defeat shortly before The Associated Press declared the winner, as stated by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray claimed that he had won before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political partisanship and is transparent and responsible.
Mr. Gray, who used to be part of the California State Assembly, won in the 13th Congressional District in a surprising turn of events compared to the 2022 election results. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in what was one of the closest House race outcomes.
