In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won against the Republican incumbent to take control of a seat that was the final House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives when the new Congress starts. Republicans will hold 220 seats while the Democrats will have 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes, admitted defeat shortly before The Associated Press announced the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday before the deadline for California counties to certify their election results.
In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and is committed to being transparent and responsible.
Mr. Gray, who used to be part of the California State Assembly, won in the 13th Congressional District, which is a change from the results of the 2022 election. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won with a very narrow margin in comparison to other House races.
