In the recent election, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in a seat change in the House of Representatives, marking the final race of the 2024 election to be officially determined by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, won against the current U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a representative for the campaign.

Mr. Gray claimed that he had won before the deadline for California counties to certify their election results. This happened on Tuesday, two days before the deadline.

In a statement released on X, Mr. Gray expressed confidence in the district’s readiness for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations.

Mr. Gray, a former California State Assembly member, won the 13th Congressional District election in 2022, reversing the results from two years ago when Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in any House race.
