On Tuesday, a Democrat who used to be a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in a change of power for the last House race of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election where over 210,000 votes were counted, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Before California counties were required to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days early.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release that the final results show that this district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the well-being of the people in the Valley over political affiliations.

Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, won in the 13th Congressional District after losing in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte narrowly won in one of the closest House races.
