On Tuesday, a former state lawmaker from the Democratic party won against the incumbent Republican to take over a seat in California’s Central Valley. This race was the final House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republican party will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before the Associated Press officially called the election, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots cast, conceded. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, which was two days before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and is transparent and responsible.

Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in one of the House races.
