In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, resulting in a shift of the seat. This race was the final House election of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes, admitted defeat just before The A.P. officially declared the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday.

Mr. Gray stated that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics, as confirmed by the final results.

Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that was different from the outcome in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte narrowly won by a small margin in the House race.
