On Tuesday, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican officeholder in California’s Central Valley, changing the outcome of the last House race of 2024 to be determined, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before the call from The A.P., Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots, admitted defeat. This information was confirmed by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday, two days before California counties had to officially confirm their election results.

In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that this district is prepared for leadership that is independent and accountable, prioritizing the people of the Valley over partisan politics.

Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that overturned the results of the 2022 election. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in comparison to other House races.
